Keeping information concise and relevant is key to the success and usability of a website. Keeping your website updated is vitally important for your customers but more-so your Google page rank (learn more about SEO).

So what is a content management system?

A content management system (CMS) is a mini website within your normal website. The CMS is not made visible to the public; you are given a web address, username and password enabling you (or your staff) to login from any computer with an internet connection. The CMS lets you quickly and easily edit the textual content that appears on your website. The CMS is driven by a database which ensures any changes you make are instantly updated throughout your website. You are also able to add and remove images from your website directly from the CMS.

What about commercial content management systems?

In most cases ‘template’ websites backed by a commercial CMS are the wrong choice. Don't be fooled by the claims of commercial Content Management Systems (CMS); if your site is less than 10 pages then steer clear. They give you far too many options and little or no tuition on actually using the necessary features.

I created a specialised content management system which is further tailored to each new client and their website. The system feeds information directly from a password protected page within your site to the database linked to your website. No coding knowledge is necessary as you simply use an interface similar to Microsoft Word to get your content looking the way you want. On saving the content the system will convert your changes to code and upload them to your website or database.

Example: "You need to change the 'contact information' page on your website"

• Simply login using your username and password at: www.yoursite.com.au/cms.
• Choose the 'contact information' page from the list. The current information is displayed in text boxes.
• Edit the text you wish to change and then hit 'Save'.
• Your website has been instantly updated at no cost.
